Introduction to San Francisco Bay Ecology

9:00 AM - 4:00 PM

San Francisco Bay Ecology – This introductory level class will cover bay plankton, benthic (bottom) ecology, hydrology (temperature and salinity) and geology. One half of the class will be taught on the Romberg Tiburon Center’s research vessel the Questuary. Participants will learn about and help deploy current scientific equipment and collect samples. The other half of the class will take place at Romberg Tiburon Center’s teaching laboratories, where participants will examine samples using a video microscope, and learn more about the geology, history and current issues facing San Francisco Bay through an interactive lecture.

Instructor: Erin Blackwood, Lecturer in Biology, SFSU

Erin Blackwood is the Education and Outreach Coordinator for the Romberg Tiburon Center. Erin holds an M.Ed. in Natural Science Education and knows the San Francisco Bay and local coastal environments well.
 

San Francisco Bay's Wild Wetlands - CANCELLED

10:00 AM - 4:00 PM

San Francisco Bay’s Wild Wetlands – This introductory level class will introduce participants to life within the Bay’s wetlands, with a focus on the unique features of the animals and plants that allow them to survive within the harsh environment of a salt marsh. Students will get up close with marsh’s small inhabitants by participating in a long-term study of life in the marsh conducted by the San Francisco Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve. Participants will learn through an interactive lecture and a field trip to marsh at China Camp State Park in San Rafael, CA.

Sarah Davies is the Education Coordinator for the San Francisco Bay NERR.
